MOUNT VERNON - A new youth theater group, the Chancel Players, has been organized by the Rev. Scott Elliott and the group's first production of Godspell is about to open at Gay Street United Methodist Church, 18 N. Gay St. Godspell is a musical based on the Gospel of Matthew featuring interpretations of bible parables. The production was first performed on Broadway in the early 1970's and features well known songs such as "Day by Day," "Prepare Ye (the say of the Lord)," and "Turn Back, Oh Man."
Four adults and a cast of youth actors between the ages of 11 to 21 have been rehearsing since the beginning of the year. Rev. Elliott says he is interested in connecting youth and the community through the performing arts. The youth players are from Fredericktown, Highland, Mount Vernon high and middle schools, some are homeschooled.

"It's about community - showing the youth that they are loved in a unique, wonderful way. If you've ever been in a play you can't help but bond because you have to travel through this journey putting on this piece of art. It's highly disciplined. It takes lots of hours and so no matter what age you are you have to be dependent on each other so there is this wonderful bonding going on," said Elliott. Local theater veteran Joe Bell of Right Brain Productions has collaborated with Rev. Elliott as producer.
Godspell will be performed March 23-31, April 1st and 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at Gay Street United Methodist Church. Tickets will be available at the door.
