On 7-19-17, while attempting to serve a warrant at a North Norton Street residence, three people were found in a tent in the backyard. One of the three people was found to have drug abuse instruments in their possession and was given a citation.

On 7-19-17, an officer was dispatched to a theft at a Vance Road location. The complainant stated that someone stole a black Worksaver bale spear. He said he left it next to his 3010 John Deere tractor before he left to go to supper at his daughter’s house in Utica. He stated he was gone between 1600 through 1900 hours and the theft probably occurred at that time. A statement was taken from the complainant.

On 7-19-17, deputies arrested Shane Shearn on an outstanding warrant issued out of Cambridge Municipal Court for failure to appear for OVI. Shearn was arrested without incident and transported to the Knox County Jail in lieu of bond or extradition.

Incidents

On 7-17-17, an officer responded to the MVPD in reference to vandalism on Marion St. An investigation continues.

On 7-18-17, an officer was in the area of 201 Madison Ave. checking out a report of a couple of juveniles on private property owned by the City of Mount Vernon. While searching the property for those two juveniles, the officer discovered two other juveniles on the property. One was identified as James Birchfield, who had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Birchfield was arrested and taken into custody. In a search incidental to Birchfield's arrest, several drug related items were found on his person. Birchfield was charged with possession of marijuana drug paraphernalia, and drug abuse instruments. Birchfield was transported to the Knox County Jail for his warrant arrest and for summons for two additional charges.

On 7-18-17, an officer observed Jessica Mantel walking through the parking lot at 855 Coshocton Ave. The officer had dispatch run her information through LEADS to check for an active arrest warrant. The report showed Mantel did have an active arrest warrant out of Licking County. Mantek was arrested and handcuffed without incident. She was transported to the Licking County line and released to a Licking County deputy.

On 7-19-17, an officer was dispatched to the bike path in the area behind Creno's Pizza. There the complainant showed the officer where a syringe was lying on the ground. The officer collected the syringe and placed it in the sharps container in the trunk of car #7 to be destroyed later date.

On 7-19-17, an officer was dispatched to a residence on North Norton in reference to finding drug paraphernalia. The complainant advised the officer that a metal spoon with residue was found in the front yard near the street. The spoon was collected and placed into evidence to be destroyed at a later date,

On 7-20-17, units were dispatched to a W. Gambier St. residence where it was reported that a male was trying to break into the residence.The male was arrested and a report was taken.

On 7-21-17, an officer responded to 218 South Main St. on a report of vandalism. When the officer arrived on the scene, he spoke to the complainant who stated someone had defaced the back gate to the business. A written statement was taken and a report completed.

On 7-17-17, Chase Sherman, 33, Plaza Dr. was arrested on a warrant for house arrest violation.

On 7-17-17, Allen Wheeler, 52, Centerburg, was arrested on a warrant for violation of house arrest.

On 7-17-17, Mitchell Billman, 34, Upper Gilchrist Rd. was arrested on a warrant for violation of house arrest.

On 7-18-17, James Birchfield, 38, Chester St. was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possessing marijuana drug paraphernalia, and on an active warrant for probation violation.

On 7-18-17, John Palmer, 26, Walhonding, was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant.

On 7-19-17, Joseph Heins,17, Adamson St. was arrested for curfew violation and on an outstanding arrest warrant.

On 7-19-17, Sarah Christine, 31, Loudenville, was arreste3d on a warrant for probation violation.

On 7-19-17, Jennifer Harman, 32, Newark, was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

On 7-19-17, Daniel Walton. 24, Marion, was arrested on two outstanding warrants.

On 7-20-17, Christopher Jobin, 46, Washington St. was arrested for assault, criminal mischief, criminal trespass and on a warrant for probation violation.

On 7-20-17, Thomas McClain, 34, Centerburg, was cited for driving under suspension/.revocation and for driving an unsafe vehicle.

On 7-20-21, Angela Baldwin, 28, Maplewood Ave. was arrested and cited for driving or physical control while under the influence and driving under an FRA suspension.

Traffic accidents

On 7-20-17, Austin N. Phillis, driving an Ellis Brothers truck was traveling eastbound on East Gambier St. and a vehicle owned by Nicole M. Johns was parked on East Gambier St. Phillis attempted to turn northbound on Potwin St. and struck Johns' vehicle.

 

KCSO confiscates hundreds of marijuana plants

MOUNT VERNON - Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputies confiscated 1018 marijuana plants Tuesday from various locations in Howard and Butler Townships. Most of the plants were approximately three feet tall.

In a news release, Sheriff David Shaffer says that so far no charges have been filed and the reports remain under investigation.

Officers were responding to complaints and tips that had been received.

Citizens are able to call and leave information on the tip line at 740-399-3959.

Knox Co. Law reports July 18, 2017

MVPD

On 7-17-17, a search warrant was obtained for a residence on Plaza Drive by the Knox County Sheriff's Office. The KCSO requested the MVPD Emergency Services Unit to execute the warrant. The Emergency Services Unit arrived on the scene and forcibly entered the residence. One male, later identified as Allen Wheeler ran out of a rear door and was secured by an MVPD officer. The resident of the apartment - Chase Sherman - as well as Mitchell Billman, Samuel Divine and Wayne Reynolds were located within the residence, handcuffed and escorted out of the apartment. Billman and Wheeler were found to have outstanding warrants unrelated to the incident and were transported to jail. The ESU cleared the scene without further incident and the scene was released to Mount Vernon Police and Knox County Sheriff's Detectives.

On 7-17-17, a male came to the MVPD to report an incident that happened at a park. The male stated that he witnessed three males in a red/maroon colored vehicle pass him three times while staring at him. The male believed he is being harassed and followed due to recent events since the beginning of July. The identity of the three males is unknown and the complainant did not offer any information, except for the color of the vehicle. A report was filed.

On 7-18-17, the complainant called to report one of the storage units at her complex had been broken into. She indicated the entire contents of the unit had been stolen. Contact was made with the victim and she advised she would provide a list of the stolen items at a later date.

On 7-18-17, the complainant called the KCSO and advised his dump truck had been stolen The trailer has been placed into LEADS as stolen.

On 7-18-17, a complainant called the KCSO and reported person(s) unknown had stolen his air compressor from a residence he was renovating on Apple Valley Blvd. In Howard. The complainant requested the incident be documented.

On 7-18-17, an officer was dispatched to the Dollar General Store in N. Sandusky St, in Mount Vernon. The complainant stated that person(s) unknown had removed property from her vehicle while she was shopping at Dollar General.

On 7-14-17, an officer responded to Foster's Eastside Pharmacy on a report of a shoplifting incident. When the officer arrived the suspect was located and was determined to have a mental illness. The suspect paid for the stolen item and Foster's declined to press charges. The investigation is now closed and no charges were filed.

On 7-14-17, an officer met with employees of Y-Not Cycling on S. Main Street in reference to the theft of a BMX style bicycle from the store. Just before 4:00 pm a male entered the store and took a bicycle for a test ride. The male returned with the bike and asked to take a second bicycle for a test run. The clerk was alerted to the theft of the second bike when he observed the male ride past the turn for the designated test-ride route. The suspect left the area, possibly heading southbound. Another store associate may have spotted the suspect at about 4:25 on Newark Rd. at Pine St. The suspect is described as a white male in his late teens or early twenties. He is about 5' 10" or slightly taller, thin build and a thin face with blonde hair and multiple tattoos on his arms. The suspect was wearing a short-sleeved, blue, "Air Jordan" T-shirt, light colored baggy jeans and white tennis shoes with blue laces. The bicycle is described as a blue We The People Nova BMX style bicycle with white tires. The serial number is HBQAK78012 and it retails for $359.99. The case remains under investigation.

On 7-14-17, an officer was dispatched to a Hickory St. residence in reference to an unresponsive male. Upon arrival, the officer made contact with medics on the scene who were administering NARCAN to the male. The individual regained conciseness and was transported to Knox Community Hospital for treatment. no charges were filed.

On 7-14-17, an officer was dispatched to a Shirley Ave. address on a report of a theft. Upon arrival, the complainant stated someone stole some of her property from her vehicle while she was in jail. Stolen items included baby formula, baby clothes, Pampers diapers, an LG Bluetooth headset, phone chargers, blankets, pillows, her boyfriend's wallet, and bank cards. An investigation is pending.

On 7-14-17, an officer was dispatched to a Shirley Ave. address on a report of a found syringe. When the officer arrived at the scene, the complainant told him the syringe was in the woods. The officer located the syringe and placed it into a sharps container. The officer reported he was wearing body camera 6 during the call.

On 7-14-17, two patrolmen responded to a McGibney Rd., address in reference to a disturbance. The complainant stated her 13-year-old daughter refused to shut the front door so the mother grabbed her daughter by the arm. The daughter got within inches of her mother's face and yelled at her. Another individual, her aunt, asked the daughter to go to her room. But the daughter refused and yelled at her also. While on the scene one of the patrolmen spoke with the daughter, who was calm, by that time. She admitted yelling at her mother and aunt and admitted she had refused to listen to her mother. The daughter was warned about her behavior and told if the police had to return she might be taken to a detention facility. The mother advised the officers that the daughter was under house arrest and on juvenile probation. The mother requested the officers contact Probation. The mother was informed by the officers that since the daughter was calm and cooperative and did not cause anybody any harm, they would forward a report to Juvenile Court and Juvenile Probation.

On 7-15-17, an officer stopped a vehicle. The driver was cited for driving a vehicle at night without headlights and a defective exhaust. A passenger was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana drug paraphernalia.

On 7-16-17, at approximately 4:59 a.m. an officer was dispatched to a Sycamore St. address on a burglary complaint. The complainant stated she came home from work and found her back door open with the glass broken out of it. In addition to that, she said it appeared as if someone had gone through her bedroom. The only thing that appeared to be missing was a 9mm pistol The pistol was entered into LEADS as stolen. There are no suspects at this time.

On 7-16-17, officers responded to a Cottage Street address on an alleged overdose. Officers entered the residence but failed to locate anyone. Information was obtained in reference to the possible overdose subject and a BOLO was issued.

On 7-14-17, Jaymie M. Mitchell was traveling westbound on W. Sugar St. and Linda Harris was traveling southbound on N. Mulberry St. when Mitchell ran the red light at the intersection and was struck by Harris. Mitchell was cited for failure to stop at a red light.

On 7-14-17, Terry Adams was stopped at the red light facing northbound in the left turn lane on Upper Gilchrist Rd. just south of Coshocton Ave. Preston D. Ransom was behind Adams and failed to stop, striking Adams in the rear.

On 7-15-17 Audie S. Matthews was traveling northbound in the Walmart parking lot when he lost control attempting to make a right-hand turn. Matthews jumped the curb and came to a stop after leaving the parking lot.

On 7-15-17, Rocco Charles Wasiewicz was traveling northbound on Newark Rd. when a deer entered the roadway, colliding with the vehicle.

On 7-15-17, Nancy J. Arquilla was traveling eastbound on Coshocton Ave. and Benjamin I. Gerich was stopped for stalled traffic. facing eastbound on Coshocton Ave. Arquilla failed to stop and struck Gerich in the rear end. Arquilla was cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead.

On 7-15-17, Eugene Beckholt was backing out of 3 Hilltop Dr. and backed across the street into a tree in the yard of 2 Hilltop Dr. Beckholt then pulled out northbound, lost control of the vehicle and entered the yard of 9 Hilltop Dr, striking the southeast corner of the residence. Beckholt continued forward and struck the north side of 7 Hilltop Dr. coming to a final rest. Beckholt was cited with failure to control.

On 7-16-17, Kenneth N. Allen was stopped facing northbound in the exit of the O'Reilly Auto Parts parking lot. Gerald Carr Grooms was traveling eastbound in the turn lane on Coshocton Ave. just west of the business. Allen began to travel northbound across the eastbound lane in an attempt to enter the westbound lane of Coshocton Ave. Allen failed to see Grooms traveling eastbound and struck him. Allen was cited for failure to yield when entering a roadway.
